London replaces Brussels as Euro 2020 host

Wembley Stadium will stage an extra four matches during Euro 2020 after UEFA announced Brussels will no longer be used as a venue for the tournament.

Wembley was already scheduled to hold the semi-finals and final but will now also host three group games and a last 16 tie.

Wembley was preferred to Cardiff and Stockholm, which were both among the original 19 candidate cities for the tournament and had also been named by UEFA as possible replacements for Brussels.

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the tournament, Euro 2020 is to be played in 12 cities across Europe, with cities divided into pairs and each pair sharing matches in a particular group.

"They still don't have the documents".

While the full schedule is still to be confirmed by UEFA, the Stadio Olimpico in Rome will stage the opening game.

"We received a letter yesterday that 31st of January there will be a final decision but the decision - yes or no - they don't know".

Ceferin said that the development of the Eurostadium had run into delays involving the applications for construction and environmental permits.

In Nyon, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said the decision of UEFA's executive committee had been unanimous.

"A huge amount of work has gone into preparation for the tournament and we are making enormous progress in preparing the Aviva Stadium for when it becomes a focus for worldwide attention during this prestigious competition".

"Missing out on Euro 2020 does not necessarily mean a death blow for our stadium plans", he said.

Rome and Baku will host Group A, Saint Petersburg and Copenhagen Group B, Amsterdam and Bucharest Group C, London and Glasgow Group D, Bilbao and Dublin Group E, with Munich and Budapest the Group F venues.

UEFA has previously indicated that qualified nations that are home to one of the 12 host cities would be assigned to that group - meaning Spain and Ireland would be automatically paired up.
