Reynolds joins The Get Down star Justice Smith, who will get some blockbuster exposure in J.A. Bayona's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Big Little Lies actress Kathryn Newton. It's reported the role is motion-capture using Reynolds as the character.
Considering how Pokémon has sold hundreds of millions of games and billions of trading cards, fans are simultaneously delighted and blown away by the casting choice. An ambitious project, given that it's the first live-action pic in the Pokemon pantheon, Detective Pikachu has been in development at Legendary since the studio acquired film rights back in the summer of 2016.
Despite that, "Detective Pikachu" is scheduled to start shooting in January. Newton will play a "sassy journalist" who will aid them on the journey.
Other information within The Hollywood Reporter's article states that "Alex Hirsch and Nicole Perlman wrote the latest draft of the script". It's said that Reynolds will play the role of Detective Pikachu. The Detective Pikachu video game was never brought outside of Japan, so it will be interesting to see if Nintendo and The Pokémon Company decide to translate the game with the film's new star. Universal Pictures will handle distribution in the US and in foreign territories outside Japan.
Before he goes yellow, Reynolds will return as his foul-mouthed mercenary in next year's Deadpool 2. Let us know in the comment section below!
