Apple Releases iOS, macOS Updates to Mitigate Spectre Chip Vulnerabilities

The 11.2.2 iOS update for iPads and iPhones has been created to address Spectre.

Even if Meltdown and Spectre have not been actively exploited as far as we know in malicious attacks, it still makes sense to protect against the problems as well as we can.

Apple on Monday rolled out an updated version of its operating system software to fix a major microchip security flaw that affected almost all computer chips made in the last decade.

iOS 11.2.2 is available for the iPhone 5S and later, iPhone touch 6th generation and later, and iPad Air and later. Meltdown doesn't get a mention since Apple rolled out measures to protect customers from it in iOS 11.2, macOS 10.13.2, and tvOS 11.2 last week.

Amid releasing updates for both the Spectre and Meltdown flaws, Apple urges users not to download applications from sources outside of the App Store. Nearly every single phone and computer out there is vulnerable, potentially allowing hackers to gain access to sensitive information.

Apple said it had already released "mitigations" against Meltdown in its latest iPhones and iPad operating system update - iOS 11.2 and the macOS 10.13.2 for its MacBooks and iMacs. Apple watchOS did not require mitigation, according to the company.

It's important to note that Spectre is being mitigated, not fixed, with these Safari-based workarounds, because it's a problem with modern CPU architecture and not a software issue.

Patches against Spectre, in the form of an update to web browser Safari, will be released "in the coming days".

Meanwhile, Mac users can now install macOS High Sierra 10.13.2 for the same Safari fixes for laptops and desktops. This version of Safari is also available for OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 and macOS Sierra 10.12.6. The technology giant also released software updates for its Mac, Apple TV and Apple Watch.
