Watch BMW break a drifting record thanks to car-to-car refueling

BMW M5 smashes world record for longest drift

You know, the one the purists diss because it comes with M xDrive all-wheel-drive instead of the more traditional RWD configuration.

It's worth mentioning the road surface was damp to facilitate the lengthy drift, but nevertheless it's an impressive accomplishment considering the driver had to go sideways for eight hours without any interruptions.

The vehicle used in the record setting run was the new BMW M5, the all-wheel drive machine which is powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that produces 441kW and 750Nm.

BMW apparently likes to do things the hard - and extremely badass - way.

The previous record, set by German driver Harald Müller in a Toyota GT86, was less than half of BMW's effort at 89.55 miles. "We're excited to have played a part in Johan and BMW recapturing this record". Plus, filling the vehicle with that much fuel would add a lot of weight and I'm sure the drivers would like to have the already portly M5 as light as possible for such a drift.

The previous record was last set by Toyota in 2017, when journalist Jesse Adams managed to keep a new 86 sideways for 165 km, a feat that took six hours and was pulled off using added, larger fuel tanks in-car. The custom dry break fuel system, capable of refuelling the BMW M5 mid-drift, was made by North Carolina-based automotive fabricators Detroit Speed.

Mullins and Butts in the fuel auto were called upon five separate times over the course of Schwartz's 8-hour drift. "In the end, the refueling system worked flawlessly and the M5 performed as expected". With them, the world record-setting BMW M5 will be on display for fans to see.
