Ford F-150 Powerstroke vs. 2018 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel: comparing the specs
Jan 10 2018 by Johnny Bowman
Ford has announced plans to introduce a new 3.0 litre diesel engine to its range of F-150 trucks for the first ever time.
Towing capacity is 11,400 pounds, which - Ford is keen to highlight - is best-in-class.
Digging deeper, the 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 is not a clean-sheet design: It shares its basic engine block with previous diesel-powered Land Rovers and Range Rovers.
Calibrated specifically for the all-new 3.0-liter Power Stroke diesel's low-end power and torque curves, a standard SelectShift 10-speed automatic transmission maximizes shift points and gear ratios to optimize power, low-rpm torque and efficiency.
The 250-horsepower V-6 engine diesel that offers 440 pound-feet of torque will be the sixth engine choice for the F-150.
The F-150, part of the F-series pickup truck line, which qualifies as the nation's best-selling vehicle, will get 30 miles per gallon on the highway while retaining the most powerful towing and hauling capabilities on the market.
Rated 250 hp at 3,250 rpm and 440 foot-pound at 1,750 rpm, the 3.0L Power Stroke weighs about 150 pounds more than the 5.0L V-8, Ford says.
The diesel-engine option is expected to add $2,400 to $4,000 to the cost of a gasoline-engined F-150 and will only be available on the pickup's highest retail trim packages: Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum.

Summarising the stage, team manager David Casteu said, "It was a very hard stage with lots of sand and challenging navigation". Nani Roma, the 2014 champion from Spain , rolled his auto a kilometer from the finish.
Diesel engines are common in large trucks, especially semi-tractor trailers.
Fiat Chrysler jarred its rivals in 2013 by offering a diesel engine in its light duty Ram pickup models and claiming best-in-class fuel economy.
"We know that competing diesels with electric cooling fans have to dial back on power under extreme heat and altitude, so we decided on a viscous-controlled mechanical fan that has the capacity to move much more air across the radiator and intercooler in extreme conditions", he says. Auto Start-Stop also comes standard, another nod to fuel efficiency.
In testing along the legendary Davis Dam in Arizona, F-150 equipped with the all-new 3.0-liter Power Stroke diesel engine climbed 13 miles at a 6 percent grade in temperatures in excess of 100 degrees - maintaining consistent power output throughout.
The new driveline will be available in various trims and body configurations for both 2-wheel-drive and 4-wheel-drive trucks.
A facelift on the aluminum pickup features a new grille and headlamps reminiscent of Super Duty models, new facias and taillamps on the 2018 Ford F-150.
