One cigarette can make two-thirds of adults addicts

Health authorities have been running wide-reaching campaigns against cigarette smoking.
Researchers found that 69% of people who had ever tried a cigarette had gone on to become a daily smoker, even if just temporarily.
The team found that 60.3% of respondents had said they had ever tried a cigarette, and among those, 68.9% said they had progressed to daily smoking.
The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency told MPs: 'E-cigs will improve public health if they become a route out of smoking for large numbers of adult smokers, without providing a route into smoking for children and non-smokers or generating new health risks. Some people have also shifted to electronic cigarettes in the recent years.
Because the surveys used different methodologies and thus yielded different results, researchers explained the estimated 68.9% "conversion rate" from experimentation to daily smoking has a margin of error, between 60.9% and 76.9%.
Previous research has noted cigarettes are unusual in that many people report not liking the taste on their first puffs - yet still go on to be regular smokers.
They add: "The finding supports strongly the current efforts to reduce cigarette experimentation among adolescents".
