Top Hamas official in Gaza wounded in mysterious shooting

Senior Hamas official Imad al-Alami is in critical condition after he accidentally shot himself in the head on Tuesday while inspecting his weapon, according to the group's spokesperson Fawzi Barhoum. Al-Alami moved back to Gaza a few years ago.
Alami has been a Hamas member since the late 1980s and was the first Hamas representative in Tehran. He spent most of his time in Syria before returning in 2012, after Hamas abandoned its longtime base in Damascus.
Al-Alami is known as the long-time Hamas envoy to the Iranian government.

The current campaign by the IS against Hamas comes following the recent efforts by Hamas to prevent from Salafi, pro-IS, and other Jihadi elements in the Gaza Strip from firing rockets at Israel in the weeks following Trump's announcement. While it is not clear how he suffered the injuries, there are various claims ranging from an elevator collapsing on a Hamas hideout to him being injured by gunfire during a battle between Hamas activists. He was treated in Turkey.
