Hepatitis A exposure at West Jordan 7 Eleven triggers hundreds of customer calls vaccine referrals

Health officials suspect link to recent outbreak to store employee.

Thousands of 7-Eleven customers who ate hot food or used the bathroom in one of the chain's stores may have contracted hepatitis A.

Thousands of customers who frequent a 7-Eleven location in West Jordan, Utah, are being warned by health officials about a possible hepatitis A exposure at the store.

Anyone who used the restroom, purchased a fountain drink, fruit, or any hot food items run a risk for contamination.

Packaged items, including bottled beverages and microwaved foods, are NOT implicated in the possible exposure.

7-Eleven customers who are fully vaccinated, which means two doses, against hepatitis A do not need to contact the health department.

Outbreaks of hepatitis A began cropping up sporadically throughout the USA in March of 2017, spurring the California government to declare a public health emergency.

7-Eleven didn't respond to a request from CSD for a comment on the situation, or the course of action the company is now pursuing.

Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus. "7-Eleven is cooperating fully with the health department's investigation and response".

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says the best protection against the virus is the hepatitis A vaccination.

Health officials say hepatitis A has an incubation period of 2-7 week, so we will not know if anyone was infected for several weeks.

Health department staff will screen callers for their exposure risk and provide them with options for receiving a prophylactic hepatitis A vaccine.

"SLCoHD believes this case is linked to the ongoing outbreak Salt Lake County has been experiencing since August 2017", the Health Department statement said.

"It's also important the food handlers be conscientious with hygiene, hand washing and not working when ill - and that managers be vigilant in enforcing those important requirements that protect public health".

Hepatitis A is a viral liver disease caused by the hepatitis A virus that spreads when an uninfected person consumes food or water that is contaminated with the germs of an infected person.

Usually people recover completely but in certain cases a person may die from fulminant hepatitis.
