Jan 10 2018 by Johnny Bowman
The streaming video service, which on Sunday night took home several Golden Globe awards for its original series "The Handmaid's Tale", hasn't released its subscriber numbers since May 2016, when it said it had 12 million USA users.
The SVOD leaders have performed well at recent award shows, but the 2018 Globes were their most dominant showing yet. Even with the added skinny bundle TV offering, Hulu is about one-third the size of Netflix in the U.S. Netflix reported 52.8 million domestic streaming subscribers as of the end of Q3 2017.
Hulu Tops 17 Million Subscribers for its subscription on-demand and live TV packages.
The company also got some new leadership, with Fox veteran Randy Freer succeeding Mike Hopkins as CEO in October. "We took several major steps to become a 21 century direct-to-consumer media company, evolving into both an aggressive SVOD business and a formidable new live TV provider". Hulu's other owners include NBCUniversal (which hold 30%) and Time Warner (with a 10% stake).
Consumers aren't the only ones who love Hulu; brands love it as well.
Hulu directly credited the popularity of originals like The Handmaid's Tale in helping it surpass the 17 million subscriber mark in its recent recap of how the service performed in 2017, pointing out the dystopian series now rates among its top three dramas (along with Law & Order: SVU and This Is Us).
The top three dramas on Hulu based on hours watched in 2017 were "Law & Order: SVU", "This is Us" and "The Handmaid's Tale", according to Huluy. Hulu played up its offering of the largest streaming TV selection in the US, boasting that it now offers 1,700 titles featuring 75,000 unique episodes.
Based on hours watched, all three of Hulu's top comedies in 2017 were animated: "Family Guy" and "Bob's Burgers" were right behind "South Park".
"The SVoD market is enjoying a sustained period of growth in the United Kingdom; more than nine million United Kingdom households subscribe to at least one SVoD service".
