Kit Harington reveals details about final season of Game of Thrones

The HBO programming president also notes that any 'Thrones' spinoff to move forward wouldn't air until at least 2020

After recently confirming that Game of Thrones won't return for its eighth and final season until 2019, HBO has now dashed fans' hopes of getting a prequel series in the meantime. "They're perfectionists and this is the soonest it can come back at a level of quality that they are comfortable with", HBO programming chief Casey Bloys tells EW.

Asked if season 8 provides a conclusive end and whether we will see a definitive ruler on the Iron Throne, Bloys replied: "I don't even want to answer that!" I know I'd prefer to have Game of Thrones back earlier. Just like with season eight, we're willing to wait, but we don't like it.

He also gave an update on the five Game of Thrones prequels which are now being worked on at HBO.

That means each of the final six episodes that will make up Season 8 could essentially be a movie. I love to have a show that people want to know this much about.

Among some of the writers already confirmed to work on the project are Max Borenstein (Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island) and Jane Goldman (X-Men, Kick-Ass). Though probably more likely one. Not everybody is on the same schedule, so I've seen different versions of different things that are potentially exciting.

The duo wanted as much time as they could to make the strongest - and most epic - episodes that they possibly could.

The trend started with Netflix deliberately breaking the annual cycle in a big way by spreading out seasons its Marvel shows like Jessica Jones and Daredevil. "I want the final season of Game of Thrones to be the final season of Game Of Thrones, I don't want to use it to launch something else, I want it to stand as the finale of the greatest tv show of all time, I don't want to do anything that infringes on that". "Thrones is coming to the end at the right time for me, and everyone involved in it".
