Sony's ability to market films and appeal to an worldwide market is said to be what led to the decision.

Sony has won the battle amongst movie distributors to claim Quentin Tarantino's upcoming film about the Manson Family murders as their own, as reported by Deadline. A deal has not been finalized just yet, but that is expected to change in the foreseeable future. We'll have to wait, mind, as the film's still in production and not due to hit cinemas until 2019 - the studio has apparently set a 9 August release date, to chillingly coincide with the 50th anniversary of the murders of Tate and her friends by the Manson family. It is set during the time of the Manson murder spree that terrorized Los Angeles in the 1960s and 70s.
According to Deadline, the 43-year-old Oscar victor nabbed one of the "two meaty male roles" circled by Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, which was referred to only as an 'aging actor'.

The as yet untitled film reunites DiCaprio and Tarantino after they first worked on Django Unchained in 2012. Variety reports that the structure will be similar to Pulp Fiction's with an ensemble approach. Business Insider contacted DiCaprio and Tarantino's representatives for confirmation but did not get an immediate response.
It will be interesting to see how the movie shakes out, once it has fully come together. The later two were also award season favorite, while THE HATEFUL EIGHT went under the radar, only earning 1 Oscar win for Best Score.
Tarantino's Manson movie was picked up by Sony in November, the same month that the cult leader died after spending 46 years in prison. If the Academy takes a liking to his latest creation, then Tarantion may end up adding even more Oscars to his shelf.
