CES is "the world's gathering place for all those who thrive on the business of consumer technologies", says the world's largest consumer tech show's website.
While attendees were initially told to wait 15 minutes for lights to turn back on, thousands of guests were evacuated from the hall when the electricity failed to return.
CNET reports that power failed in parts of the Las Vegas Convention Center's South and Central Halls on the second day of exhibitions. "We will continue to restrict access until full power has been restored". And the more socially conscious pointed out the hypocrisy of being bent out of shape over a brief blackout at CES when an entire territory of the United States has been without power for months...
Update 6:39pm CT, Jan. 10: The CES blackout was caused by "condensation from heavy rainfall" on a transformer at the Las Vegas Convention Center, convention authorities said in a statement Wednesday. Without power, most of the companies exhibiting their new technologies on the show were not able to do anything during the blackout.
"I was on the Samsung tour getting a look at the booth, the power went off, and then immediately after that a generator kicked on, so some of the lights turned on", Tracy said. Samsung, Intel, LG and Panasonic were among the tech companies that lost power.
Exhibitors have not yet put forward any complaints concerning damages caused by the power outage, nor has the show organizer officially mentioned a plan regarding the mishap.
LG Electronics used the power cut to promote its OLED TV by saying, "Even without power, #CES2018 still can't match the flawless black of an #LGOLEDTV".
