The rebel-held enclave of Eastern Ghouta, just east of the Syrian capital city of Damascus, continues to be a very risky place for civilians, with a flurry of airstrikes against the area killing at least 30 civilians early Thursday morning.

That bloodshed came after Abdel Rahman said Russian and regime strikes on Wednesday claimed the lives of 29 civilians in eastern Ghouta. 35 others were also wounded in the eastern Ghouta.

Nine women and two children were among the 18 people killed, it said, adding that the number might rise because some of the injured were in a critical condition.

The Syria Civil Defence said two children and two women were among the six people killed in the air strikes on Arbin, and that another three civilians were killed by government shellfire in Beit Sawa.

The Khmeimim military airport, which hosts the biggest Russian airbase in Syria, was attacked for a second time in a row this week by a drone believed to belong to a faction in the countryside of Latakia, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

There was no immediate comment from the Russian military, which is providing air support to government forces in the area but insists it has never targeted civilians.

On the outskirts of Damascus, eastern Ghouta is one of the last remaining opposition strongholds in Syria and has itself been under government siege since 2013, causing severe food and medicine shortages for up to 400,000 residents.
