"Until further notice, and unless otherwise provided in this guidance, the DACA policy will be operated on the terms in place before it was rescinded on September 5, 2017". No new applications will be accepted. That's even though a federal judge ordered the Trump administration to restart the program that it canceled previous year.
But members of Congress have struggled to agree on a permanent legal solution for DACA recipients.
Former President Barack Obama enacted DACA to keep the undocumented immigrants, known as dreamers, from being deported.
"This week, President Trump provided leadership on a hard issue that our nation has faced for decades and Main Street members want to help the president address our broken immigration system", said U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Ill.), Chairman of the Republican Main Street Caucus.
Donna Salcido, immigration services coordinator for InterServ, said there are about 15 St. Joseph residents she sees who are affected by the DACA ruling. As of the end of March, more than 200,000 people had been initially approved for the program, meaning they could legally work and were protected from deportation.
Renewal applications will, however, only be accepted from people who previously received DACA and whose deferred action had expired on or after September 5, 2016.
The cost to file a renewal application will be the same as before, $495.
The program granted temporary protection from deportation to hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S.as children, often referred to as "dreamers". Those accepted for the program received permits to work legally in the USA for two years, which could be renewed for additional 2-year periods.
The president has demanded extra border security, including funding for a wall, as well as an end to family-based chain migration and the visa lottery program.
