Karti is accused of receiving kickbacks a decade back to clear foreign investment into INX Media group, using the influence of his father P. Chidambaram, who was then the Union finance minister.
"The apprehension raised by the senior counsel for accused can not be ignored keeping in view the social status of accused and his family, more specifically, his father who is a former union minister".
Although the Delhi High Court had granted Karti relief, by barring his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate till March 20, the barring of arrest was not applicable in the case of an arrest by the CBI.
The Delhi court ordered the jail authorities to ensure that adequate security is provided to Karti Chidambaram until March 24.
While admitting that the apprehension raised cannot be ignored keeping in view the social status of the accused and his family, the judge said, "only keeping in view the fact of social status of the accused and his father, he cannot be treated different from other accused persons and cannot be allowed to be kept in separate prison".
Fashion titan Hubert de Givenchy dies aged 91
The announcement of his death came from the Givenchy fashion house, which is now owned by French luxury goods group LVMH. He went on to work with Robert Piguet and Lucien Lelong in 1946, and then for Elsa Schiaparelli between 1947 and 1951.
Earlier on Monday, the CBI asked the court to send Karti Chidambaram, who is lodged in Tihar jail, to judicial custody for 15 days. He also sought a separate cell in case Karti was sent to judicial custody. The CBI said Karti remained "evasive" and "non-cooperative" during interrogation and sought 15 days judicial custody. He has cited security threats in his request.
CBI counsel V K Sharma opposed the application for a separate cell and bathroom saying there was no threat to Karti.
The judge, however, did not find reason to grant his plea for a separate cell, saying Karti can not be treated differently from the other accused just because of his and his father's social status. The second is to allow the CBI to bring the Mukherjeas to Delhi from Mumbai and identify the places where they met Karti Chidambaram. "He be produced on March 24", the special judge said.
On Friday, the CBI moved two more applications, seeking court permission to confront Karti Chidambaram with his Chartered Accountant S. Bhaskararaman, arrested last month. He has been in CBI custody for questioning since his arrest from Chennai Airport on February 28.
Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the special court that the CBI had recovered evidence to prove that Karti Chidambaram had direct links with Advantage Strategic, which allegedly received lakhs of rupees for facilitating Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approvals for INX Media and Aircel companies.
