Bhandari Re-elected as Nepal President

Mar 14, 2018-Incumbent President Bidya Devi Bhandari has been re-elected as the head of state for the second time, securing almost three-fourths of the total vote strength of the Electoral College. Constitution experts and analysts say her inability to be a unifying figure could hurt not just the presidential institution, but also the republic that is still in its infancy.

She was elected twice in parliamentary elections in 1994 and 1999 and also served as the defence minister.

'The preparations for the election of today have been completed.

The Election Commission said Bhandari received a large majority of the ballots.

However, the vote weightage of the lawmakers from the adjacent parliaments is different.

The CPN-UML carries a total vote bank of 23,356 in the country, with 148 lawmakers in the Federal Parliament and 243 in the Provincial Assemblies, while the CPN (Maoist Centre) has 65 lawmakers in the Parliament and 108 in the Provincial Assemblies, which total the vote bank for 10,319.

The Rastriya Janata Party- Nepal and the Federal Socialist Forum- Nepal are expected to vote in favour of Bhandari assuring Bhandari's continuation over the post. The Nepali Congress is left behind with 11,428 vote weightage and the RJP-N and the FSF-N has vote weightage of 2,845 and 3,198 vote weightage.
