Mar 14, 2018-Incumbent President Bidya Devi Bhandari has been re-elected as the head of state for the second time, securing almost three-fourths of the total vote strength of the Electoral College. Constitution experts and analysts say her inability to be a unifying figure could hurt not just the presidential institution, but also the republic that is still in its infancy.

She was elected twice in parliamentary elections in 1994 and 1999 and also served as the defence minister.

The Election Commission said Bhandari received a large majority of the ballots.

However, the vote weightage of the lawmakers from the adjacent parliaments is different.

The vote weightage of a member of federal parliament comprising House of Representatives and National Assembly is 79 while it is 48 for the provincial assembly members. The Nepali Congress is left behind with 11,428 vote weightage and the RJP-N and the FSF-N has vote weightage of 2,845 and 3,198 vote weightage.
