Manchester United's Carrick to retire at end of season

Michael Carrick

Manchester United's Michael Carrick has confirmed this will be his last season as a player. That's pretty much where I'm at.

Carrick, capped 34 times by England, has looked likely to leave United in recent summers only to pen extensions at a club that rewarded his fine service with a testimonial a year ago.

The thirty-six year old has barely featured for the Red Devils this season, making just four appearances while he had a minor operation to treat an irregular heartbeat in October. It's kind of been sorted out. We're still talking about it, to be honest, so there's nothing totally confirmed as yet.

It has been an illustrious career in the middle of the Old Trafford turf for Carrick since arriving from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006, playing a whopping 436 matches in that time which has included 19 major trophies which has included five Premier League titles and two European trophies. He further talked about his coaching role with the club, with whom he has seen his best days in professional football and said the talks are on but nothing is concrete yet.

Carrick's retirement could also been linked to a heart problem that the 36-year-old has been battling, with the midfielder claiming it flared up once again during a Carabao Cup match earlier this season.

'Obviously, I had the problem in the Burton game, when it started during the second half, and then had a few tests after that, ' he told the media ahead of tomorrow's game.

"I wanted to finish on my own terms so I was determined to get back fit", he added. "There were 2 or 3 times when I wondered whether it was worth still playing, but I soon got over that".

Carrick has made three appearances in all competitions since returning from the heart complaint, but the skipper is still hoping to have a say in United's fortunes before calling time on his playing career.
