The details of how and where Tercero - who's suspected in the murder of Haley Anderson, 22 - was taken into custody were not released.
Anderson's body was found on Friday around 1 p.m.at an off-campus home in Binghamton, New York, where Tercero lived, as WNBF News reported.
"The investigation determined that the person of interest has left the United States by worldwide air travel flight, prior to the discovery of Haley Anderson's deceased body", police said this weekend in a statement obtained by ABC News.
Tercero is being transferred to the prison in El Chipote, which is about 40 miles southwest of the capitol, Managua.
Authorities ruled the death a homicide but have not released additional details about how she was killed. "Then we put two and two together quickly".
Broome County District Attorney Stephen Cornwell Jr., had said his office would present evidence to a grand jury and, if there was an indictment, ask Nicaragua, which does not have an extradition treaty with the United States, to return "the defendant back to Broome County".
He apparently holds dual citizenship. Nicaraguan news outlets refer to Tercero as an American national.
