USA gun control: Trump accused of bowing to NRA pressure

President Trump yesterday unveiled a bare-bones plan to combat school shootings that marked his retreat from gun control policies he had repeatedly championed just weeks ago, in a move likely to soothe the powerful National Rifle Association.

DeVos characterized the administration's efforts as "a pragmatic plan to dramatically increase school safety". A similar proposal, which expanded the number of armed officers in schools, was implemented by the Obama administration in the months following the mass shooting in Sandy Hook, Conn.

"To the extent she's still taking money and she's still in the West Wing, she has numerous same issues", said Stephen Spaulding, chief of strategy at Common Cause, a nonpartisan group that has examined Donald Trump's conflicts of interest.

"On 18 to 21 Age Limits, watching court cases and rulings before acting".

"Now, this is not a popular thing to say, in terms of the NRA".

"If you had a teacher who was adept at firearms, they could end the attack very quickly", he has said.

Trump himself admitted in an earlier tweet that he is not now pushing age restrictions that could have prevented 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz from buying the powerful AR-15 assault rifle used on February 14 to kill 14 students and three adults at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Legislatively, the administration is calling on Congress to pass two bills to enhance gun and school safety. "He talked a really big game about what he would be supportive of, so it's disappointing to see the proposal that he put forward falls way short of what parents in my community are expecting us to do".

At a campaign rally in Pennsylvania Saturday, Trump mocked the idea of a commission to solve problems government should tackle head-on. What Trump says and does is almost always some synthesis of whatever he thinks will enable him to achieve the end he wants at any given time. They're a potentially important mechanism - but not as aggressive as what Trump outlined. Since nearly immediately after the Parkland shooting, the president has advocated arming some teachers as a solution to stopping future massacres.

"Right now the president's primary focus is on pushing through things that we know have broad bipartisan support or things that we can do from an administrative perspective, that we can do immediately, but we haven't let go of some of those other things that we are going to continue to review".

It made no mention of expanding the vetting of firearms buyers to sales online and at gun shows, another idea previously floated by the White House.

He told other senators in January he was ready to back a bipartisan immigration bill until he reversed course within hours. John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Chris Murphy, D-Conn., that is created to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System; and the STOP School Violence Act, which would authorize state-based grants to implement violence prevention training for teachers and students.

On Friday, it filed a lawsuit contesting Florida's new age limit law.

The NRA contends the new Florida law is unconstitutional because it raises the minimum age to buy rifles and puts a blanket ban on the fundamental rights of some law-abiding Florida citizens. "I think this is the beginning".

That wasn't all. Trump said he'd rather confiscate weapons from someone suspected of mental illness first and deal with due process later.
