Which Bay Area chefs, restaurants are James Beard Award finalists?

Three San Antonio chefs made the James Beard semifinalist list of 2018 Restaurant and Chef Award, announced February 15 - chefs Diego Galicia and Rico Torres of Restaurant Mixtli and McHugh.

Rich Landau, chef/partner with his wife, Kate Jacoby, at the vegan destination Vedge in Washington Square, was nominated for best chef in the Mid-Atlantic region.

This is McHugh's third nomination for the award, considered the USA food industry's highest honor.

The James Beard Foundation announced the finalists for its annual restaurant and chef awards Wednesday morning in Philadelphia. Grupe, Luo and Shelton were first-time semifninalists in the category.

Camille Cogswell, pastry chef at Zahav in Old City, was nominated for rising star chef. The fine-dining spot on Farwell Ave. with a seasonal menu was a semifinalist for Best New Restaurant, a national award, in 2014.

Outstanding Service: San Francisco's iconic Zuni Cafe will go up against the city's Saison and three other US restaurants for the award that honors a business that "demonstrates high standards of hospitality and service". The category is reserved for chefs aged 30 or younger. Christensen is the only new name in the category; Link and Hamilton were finalists previous year.

After Underbelly chef-owner Chris Shepherd ended the city's 22-year long drought by winning the award in 2014, chefs Justin Yu (Oxheart, Theodore Rex) and Hugo Ortega followed in 2016 and 2017, respectively.
