Thousands of mourners flocked Wednesday to the heart of South Africa's sprawling Soweto township, a center of anti-apartheid resistance, to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela's former wife and struggle hero Winnie Mandela.

The Department of Arts and Culture in partnership with the Joburg Theatre honoured fallen stalwart, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela on 12 April. And she'd say: 'Darling, I don't think I would be able to sleep. Ndileka is the Mandelas' eldest grandchild.

Mrs. Mandela will be laid to rest this Saturday after nearly two weeks of mourning.in a state funeral at the Fourways Memorial Park Cemetery in Johannesburg.

The African National Congress has launched the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Day of Service in Orlando.

"She affirmed both the love and anger of black people; always committed to their right to defend their lives even (with) arms in the face of a deadly apartheid evil", the radical leftist party said in a statement.
