Major New York progressive group endorses Cynthia Nixon

"I have seen firsthand the hard work NYPAN have been doing to organize for a better, more progressive NY, and stand up to Governor Cuomo's destructive policies by demanding we take big money out of politics again".
NYPAN co-chair Traci Strickland stated: "Cynthia Nixon, who, unlike the incumbent, is not an ambitious career politician, is not deterred by Cuomo's horde of millions of campaign dollars collected nearly exclusively from the 1% of corporate polluters, hedge fund billionaires, real estate speculators and other rich special interests".
In March, Nixon first declared her support for legalization, arguing that doing so would raise millions in tax revenue and help the struggling agriculture industry.
Many progressives and liberals are unsatisfied with Cuomo's reign as governor, who's seen as a more moderate Democrat, which is what spurred Nixon to run for the nomination.
The Working Families Party was formed in 1998 by labor unions and community groups and advocates for progressive issues. It endorsed Democratic incumbent Andrew Cuomo four years ago.
When the nod becomes official at the party's nominating convention next month, it would give Nixon a critical line on the November ballot if she loses the Democratic primary in September. But Cuomo said Friday he would not seek its backing this year.
The former "Sex and the City" star received more than 90 percent of party members' votes at their annual committee meeting.
Recently, Nixon has spoken out on the deficits that she says schools with large minority populations face, which predominantly white schools do not.
"I will win the Democratic primary", Nixon told reporters after the vote.
