UNSC Fails to Adopt Russia-Drafted Resolution Condemning Western Attack on Syria

US President Donald Trump's threat of military retaliation in Syria have raised risks of a direct confrontation with Russia

"When our president draws a red line, our president enforces the red line". The U.N. Security Council was meeting at Moscow's request.

This photo released by the Syrian official news agency SANA, shows anti-aircraft fire in the sky after USA -led airstrikes targeting different parts of the Syrian capital Damascus in retaliation for the country's alleged use of chemical weapons early on Saturday.

Russian Federation and the United States dramatically faced off in a UN Security Council session, hours after US, French and British forces launched missiles at Assad's chemical weapons stockpile.

Russia, which has troops on the ground in Syria supporting Syrian President Bashar Assad, is known to run state-supported campaigns used to spread disinformation online.

The mission, according to Pentagon officials, has "significantly crippled" Syrian President Bashar Assad's ability to manufacture chemical weapons.

United States officials said that none of the 105 missiles had been intercepted by Syrian air defences.

A Pentagon briefing later said the strikes had "set the Syrian chemical weapons programme back for years".

Syria and its allies condemned the attack and Russian Federation called a meeting of the UN Security Council last night to discuss what it described as a blatant disregard for global law.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation chief urges Russian Federation to 'exercise responsibility' on Syria
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the attack was a "crime" and declared Theresa May, Donald trump and Emmanuel Macron "criminals".

The decision by the U.S. president, Donald Trump, to launch air strikes on Syria with backing from the United Kingdom and France has proved globally divisive, with some countries praising the military action while others condemned it as provocative and unacceptable. Washington says it has confirmed that chlorine gas was used, and has unconfirmed suspicion that nerve agents may also have been used. Hearing explosions and watching Syrian military surface-to-air missiles streak through the skies, many in Syria suspected a large-scale US-led intervention was underway. He accused the allies of violating the U.N. Charter and worldwide law. The statement went on to decry the attack on the country as a "grave breach of worldwide law".

The strikes drew a harsh response from Russian Federation, a key Syrian ally.

The Pentagon says the USA -led airstrikes on Syria "successfully hit every target".

Two other chemical weapons facilities near Homs were targeted, the Pentagon said. There is no military solution to the crisis. They are in eastern Syria, far from Damascus. "It is our common duty to stop it".

On Capitol Hill in Washington, however, the strikes ignited a fresh debate over the scope of the war on terror and just how far the Trump Administration can commit US forces to an undeclared war in the Middle East.

Trump chastised Russian Federation and Iran for supporting "murderous dictators", and noted that Putin had guaranteed a 2013 worldwide agreement for Assad to get rid of all of his chemical weapons.

In a statement released early Saturday morning, Putin denounced the strikes as an "act of aggression" that would have a "destructive influence on the entire system of global relations".

"Friday night's military action was created to thread a pretty narrow needle - place boundaries around the war Syria, Russia and Iran are waging - without becoming a direct combatant in it", wrote former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State PJ Crowley on the BBC website.
