In mid-April, a winter weather alert is issued for Upstate NY

The rain and freezing rain will come later.

The National Weather Service lifted the winter weather advisory for Suffolk, Norfolk, and northern Bristol counties Sunday morning, but cold temperatures are still expected, an official said.

Freezing rain may become mixed with or turn over to ice pellets before potentially tapering off to patchy freezing drizzle for a few hours Saturday night.

Light rain will change over to freezing rain Saturday evening before increasing in intensity overnight, Lincoln Park police said.

The advisory is for Oneida, Yates, Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Steuben, Schuyler, Tompkins, Madison, Cortland, Chenango and Otsego counties.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 PM for Sioux Falls and for portions of Minnesota and Iowa until 7 PM.

The wintry mix is expected to stretch into Monday morning. There could be total ice accumulation of a tenth to a quarter inch, according to the National Weather Service.

The Service is forecasting sleet and freezing rain.

Slippery roads, sidewalks and paved surfaces will make for very hard travel and greatly complicate any outdoor activities in affected areas.
