Heavy Rain Tonight. Some Flood Watches Posted

First flood watch posted for Upstate NY as heavy rain approaches

A flash flood watch for most of the Mountain State has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS), with particular attention being paid to the eastern mountains.

The GRCA issued the watch through to Tuesday, April 17, and cites current forecasts of local rainfall totals expected to reach 90 millimeters in some areas along the Grand River.

Among the counties included in the watch are McDowell, Wyoming, Raleigh, Fayette, Nicholas, Mercer, Monroe, Summers and Greenbrier.

About 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rain fell in the region from Sunday into early Monday, according to Pat Herald, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Moon. Forecasters warned that unsafe flash flooding is still possible.

A flash flood warning means that flash flooding is imminent or already occurring.

As of 4:30 a.m. Monday, Herald did not expect an appreciable amount of rain later Monday morning. Rapidly rising flood waters may inundate roadways quickly.

Weather officials say the greatest risk for flooding will be along windward slopes, though all areas could experience flooding. According to the NWS, flash flooding is extremely risky.

Another low pressure system is expected to approach the ara later Wednesday and last into Thursday evening, bringing another round of rain to the region.
