Over 200 Million Eggs Recalled After East Coast Salmonella Outbreak

After a salmonella outbreak was traced to a farm in North Carolina, the company that owns the farm has taken measures to recall over 200 million eggs.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a notice about the recall Friday, warning consumers that 22 illnesses have been reported in states along the east coast of the US because of the eggs.

The eggs reached consumers in Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, New Jersey, Virginia, Colorado, South Carolina, and West Virginia. The eggs were sold under the brands Country Daybreak, Sunshine Farms, Coburn Farms, Crystal Farms, Glenview and Great Value. "Throw them away or return them to place of purchase for credit or refund". They're most severe for infants, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.

Hens infected with salmonella can lay contaminated eggs.

At least 200 million eggs have been recalled across the United States due to salmonella after 22 illness were reported related to the eggs.

Salmonella can be present in either the yolk or white of an egg. Hens that are infected with salmonella do not get sick, so there's no way to tell if a chicken is infected.

Raw eggs can contain salmonella so handle them carefully. In healthy individuals, the organism can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

The illness commonly lasts up to four to seven days. The eggs have been sold in various stores in nine states, including Walmart and Food Lion.

The Rose Acre Farms recall is the latest in a series of salmonella-related incidents in recent months. When animal feces contaminate meat, poultry, or dairy products, the bacteria spread.

The USDA requires producers to wash eggs to reduce the risk of surface contamination, and most large producers take an extra step to sanitize the shells.
