BJP asked to form government in Karnataka despite lack of majority

Karnataka Elections

Negotiations gathered pace once the exit polls suggested a fractured mandate, and culminated Wednesday, with the JD (S) and Congress alliance. This is the victory of every Kannadiga who voted to uproot the corrupt & divisive politics of Congress.

He said in Jharkhand in 2005, Goa in 2017 and in the Jagadambika Pal case in Uttar Pradesh, the court advanced the date of floor test from seven days to 48 hours. When the Congress was in power at the Centre they did it in some states; and the BJP has followed in the footsteps of the "murderer of democracy" (their words).

The BJP has 104 MLAs in the House, eight short of the magic figure of 112.

Polling trends varied from region to region, some of these serving as a pointer to the mismatch between votes polled and seats won.

The party's state President ruled out aligning with the BJP this time, to avoid hurting his father, JD-S supremo and former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda. Unless some of the MLAs belonging to the Congress or the JD (S) switch over, there is no way the BJP could achieve majority in the Assembly. Janata Dal (Secular) has however agreed to form a coalition with Congress, which previously controlled the assembly but saw its share cut to 78 seats from 122 previously.

"JD (S) MLAs are being offered Rs.100 crore each".

However, the move delivered a severe blow to the BJP's reputation as a "party with a difference".

He said the court could also strike down the decision of the Governor and say let him consider the material and decision as to who was in a position to provide a stable government in the state. However, everything goes in the political arena, especially under the guise of something called a post-poll alliance where two parties who have been going hammer and tongs at each other announce nearly immediately after the results are out that they plan to get together to trip up the front-runner who is marginally short of the number of seats to form the government. He said, "Governor has assured that he will take action as per the Constitution".

When BJP leaders sent Modi to Gujarat in 2001, no MLA was interested initially in vacating their seat for Modi.

Replying to a question at the party office, veteran party leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa said, "No elected member from the Lingayat/Veerashaiva community will switch the side". The focus now shifts to the floor of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly where the BJP will have to prove it has a majority.

Constitutional expert Subhash Kashyap told ANI that Governor has "complete power" to appoint the Chief Minister.

Modi wants to secure Karnataka to keep his momentum going in the run-up to the general election.

Congress-JD (S) alliance chief ministerial candidate HD Kumaraswamy has accused the Governor of encouraging horse-trading. Indeed we were all invited to applaud as Bharatiya Janata Party mangers used every trick in their armoury, including money power and the presence of "their" governors, to wrest control of Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Goa.

The Congress and the JD (S) have a history of tripping each other up politically, although the JD (S) has not done a very good job of keeping its word to the BJP either.
