120 firefighters battle hotel fire in Knightsbridge

More than 100 firefighters were sent to tackle the fire at the five-star Mandarin Oriental hotel, in the exclusive Knightsbridge district of the United Kingdom capital.

Deputy Commissioner Director of Safety and Assurance Steve Apter said: "Once again, the skills, professionalism and quality of LondonFire Brigade was tested at a challenging fire. This is at the request of the emergency services". Fire crews from Chelsea, Kensington, Hammersmith, Battersea and other surrounding fire stations are at the scene.
Plumes of smoke could be seen right across the capital as far as Hackney.
LondonFire officials have revealed they were alerted to the blaze at just before 4pm local time.
A major fire has broken out at a hotel near Hyde Park in central London.
The Mandarin Oriental is home to the two-Michelin-starred Dinner by Heston Blumenthal restaurant, as well as Daniel Boulud's Bar Boulud.
A TV presenter, Anna Whiteley, in a tweet revealed that she was evacuated from the hotel.

"I saw all this black smoke coming from the sky, it was covering everything and the smell was horrendous".
Knightsbridge has been closed between Sloane Street and Grosvenor Place.
