Houston Rockets To Aggressively Pursue Paul George

Chris Paul Won't Take Pay Cut To Stay With Houston Rockets: Report

The Houston Rockets may need to open their wallets wide in order to hang on to veteran point guard Chris Paul, who is slated to be a free agent this summer.

The Thunder apparently have a legitimate chance to re-sign Paul George in free agency, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Houston is now a contender to lure LeBron James from Cleveland, and steal Paul George from Oklahoma City in free agency.

There is no smoking gun that has tied LeBron to any one team, though common rumors have pegged Houston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and still Cleveland as potential landing spots. From the MVP seasons, to unforgettable moments, to winning an National Basketball Association championship, James has done more for Cleveland than perhaps any other athlete ever. However, paying Paul $46-47 million per year will bury the Rockets deep in the luxury tax hell.

Restricted free agent center Clint Capela is expected to receive a massive raise this summer, while Trevor Ariza and Gerald Green are among key unrestricted free agents. "I don't imagine it playing out that way".

Since acquiring him from the Indiana Pacers last July, George has averaged 21.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.0 steals across 79 appearances with OKC. This season, Paul missed 24 regular-season games, and he missed the final two games of the Western Conference Finals against the Golden State Warriors after suffering a right hamstring strain in Game 5.

Another important thing that the Rockets should consider before giving Paul a max deal is his age and recurring injuries. If they give Paul a max contract, it remains a huge mystery how the Rockets will be able to sign LeBron James.
