Celebrity suicides highlight troubling trend in midlife

More than half of suicides in 2015 in a subgroup of 27 states were among people with no known mental health condition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found. Suicide is rarely caused by any single factor, health officials said, but information from coroners' reports suggest numerous deaths followed relationship problems, substance use and financial crises. Ms. Spade and Mr. Bourdain are now among the approximately 45,000 suicides each year in the United States.

Suicide rates across the country have risen 30 percent over the last two decades, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report.

NY has the second lowest suicide rates in the country.

Virginia reports a 29 percent increase in children taking their own lives.

The biggest increase in suicides was in North Dakota, where the rate jumped more than 57 percent.

In a 2016 report, the CDC found that USA suicide rates jumped 24 percent from 1999 to 2014.

According to #BeThe1To, a public health campaign by the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, warning signs for suicide can include talking about feeling hopeless, trapped or like a burden to others; talking about wanting to die; increasing drug and alcohol use; acting anxiously or behaving recklessly; withdrawing from people; and experiencing extreme mood swings.
