Trump arrives in Singapore ahead of historic North Korea summit

Trump Kim converge on Singapore ahead of high-stakes summit

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien-loong on Sunday as he visited the city-state for his historic summit with U.S. President Donald Trump this week.

The area includes the summit venue, Capella Hotel on Sentosa Island and the places around Shangri-La Hotel and the St. Regis Hotel where Trump and Kim are expected to stay, respectively. For the North, Kim Jong Un has already won a huge propaganda bonus by merely having the summit and sitting down as an equal with the US president, an accomplishment his father and grandfather sought but could never realize.

The Singaporean prime minister said in response that he is grateful for the North's decision to hold the summit in Singapore.

Menendez spoke Sunday on ABC's "This Week" as President Donald Trump arrived in Singapore ahead of Tuesday's talks with Kim. Considering Trump has admitted that he hasn't prepared for this upcoming meeting, he will need to rely on his alleged "best negotiator" skills to get the job done.

Among the members of Trump's team are Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, National Security Advisor John Bolton, White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders.

Earlier this year, North Korean leader said he was ready to denuclearize and signed a corresponding agreement with South Korean President Moon Jae-in at the inter-Korean summit in the truce village of Panmunjom in late April.

Worldwide anticipation for Tuesday's summit between the most unconventional American president in modern times and an autocrat who is perhaps the world's most isolated leader has grown quickly since the summit was put together at a lightning pace over the past few weeks.

One diplomatic source in Singapore said, "Tension was very high in North Korea, hence the secrecy".

Trump has sought to lower expectations for the summit in recent days, suggesting that it would be the start of a lengthy process to get Pyongyang to begin dismantling its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. He initially touted the potential for a grand bargain with North Korea to rid itself of a nuclear missile programme that has advanced rapidly to threaten the United States.

UN Security Council Resolution 2270 forbids loaning aircraft, ships and crew to North Korea, but Beijing apparently had US approval.

For Kim, the transformation is even more remarkable.

Kim told Lee: "The entire world is watching the historic summit between the DPRK and the United States of America, and thanks to your honest efforts. we were able to complete the preparation for the historic summit".

It is the farthest Kim has travelled since inheriting power in 2011, and only his third known trip outside the country since then, with the use of a Chinese plane raising questions over the state of North Korea's ageing fleet of Soviet-built aircraft.

Many experts on North Korea, one of the most insular and unpredictable countries in the world, remain sceptical Kim will ever completely abandon its cherished nuclear weapons.
